Wait Until Dark
Author: Frederick Knott
Season: 2022-23
The play is set in the 1960s in a basement apartment in Greenwich Village. The apartment is owned by a photographer, Sam Hendrix and his blind wife Susy.
A sinister con man named Roat has traced the location of a mysterious doll, which he is very much interested in, to Sam and Susy’s apartment. Sam had been persuaded by a strange woman to transport the doll across the Canadian border. Since bringing it home, the doll has been misplaced and when the woman showed up to reclaim it, it couldn’t be found. Roat has hired two ex-convicts, Mike and Carlino to help him pull off a cleverly constructed deception to convince Susy to find the doll and give it to them.
As the play progresses Susy becomes suspicious and with the help of a little girl who lives upstairs she forms a plan to try to set things up to her advantage. As darkness falls a terrifying game of cat and mouse ensues.
“Wait Until Dark” was made into a movie in 1967. 55 years later it is still #10 on Bravo’s list of the top 100 scariest movie moments.
